THE BACKGROUND
Meet Bruce
Yoga came into my life at a time of adversity. I was working as a yachtsman when I sustained a shoulder injury. A physiotherapist suggested I find a yoga teacher and I began studying Scaravelli-inspired yoga with William Lane. I studied with him for over five years. His understanding of the body and the emotional side of yoga continues to influence me and he remains a teacher of mine to this day.
At that first class, I knew my body felt better. When I got home, I realised my mind also felt better. I went back the following week and have been returning ever since. That calm peace of mind remains at the centre of my practice.
For me, yoga is ultimately meditation. Moving from asana to Vipassana was a natural transition. I spent many weeks and months and now years practising in the tradition of S. N. Goenka. I also met and studied with Zen monk, Joshin Sen, for six years. The big take I gained from Joshin was to 'let go' of everything . He remains a great friend.
I felt a pull towards India from a young age. In 2023, I travelled to Kerala and undertook 500 hours of yoga teacher training practice, alongside Ayurvedic study. More recently, I studied yoga philosophy in Goa with Bhavna Kothari. I am still a student and believe learning continues long after a course ends.
Teaching has been part of my life for many years - I taught sailing for many years and, for a short while, guitar and songwriting. Through yoga, I discovered what these teaching skills could really achieve. As such,
I can only teach what I understand through my own experience.
In class, we pause and arrive in the present moment. We begin with gentle movement and awareness of breath, then build towards postures that us help experience the mind and body. The posture is not the destination, movement and breath prepare us for stillness. The true learning happens in Shavasana. If you leave my class with a sense of calm restoration, I feel I have achieved something useful.
